Columba Light Festival

Friday, February 11, 2011

Celebrating the winter season, peace, and unity – the Columba Light Festival will have West Vancouver sparkling February 11-12, 2011. Hosted by the District of West Vancouver and the West Vancouver Community Arts Council, the festival celebrates togetherness with two days of evening and afternoon celebrations along the waterfront and at the West Vancouver Community Centre.

The constellation Columba – “Dove” in Latin – will appear in the skies above West Vancouver during the month of February, lending its name and theme to the festival.

Sponsored by Park Royal Shopping Centre, the event will feature a live outdoor concert by Mother Mother with special guests Said the Whale, a Phoenix Rising Fire Show, performance by the Eagle Song Dancers, Oceanside Ice Skating rink and much more!

As part of the Columba Light Festival, Park Royal will be putting up the mobile ice-skating rink. This isn’t an ordinary rink – it’s made with a special synthetic ice that can be used in any temperature. Last year we had it in The Village, this year it will be down by Ambleside Beach at the 14th Ferry Building landing.
Operating hours will be 12pm to 9pm daily from February 11th to 20th with free skate rentals and free sharpening available. Donations are graciously accepted and will be donated to the West Vancouver Parks Board. There will be great music and lots of fun events happening at the skating rink. Some of the fun things you can expect:

  • Saturday, February 12th 6:30pm to 8:30pm West Vancouver Starlight Skate
  • Monday, February 14th 6:30pm to 8:30pm Sweetheart Skate
  • Sunday, February 20th 5pm to 9pm Closing Celebration
  • Watch our Inside Scoop for the fun schedule of events at the rink and tips for using the rink.

    Skating Tips:
o Skate rentals are available on a first come, first serve basis. Photo ID must be left with skating staff in exchange for skate rental. Skate sharpening service available.
o Skates need to be super sharp – the nature of this ice surface dictates that all skates be sharpened after only an hour and a half of skating.
o All skate rentals and skate sharpening is available for free, by donation, with all proceeds going to the West Vancouver Parks Board.
o Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult or a babysitter who is older then 14.
o No hockey sticks or pucks permitted.
    o Helmets are strongly recommended.
o No racing, hockey, tag, boisterous conduct or rough play is permitted in and around the rink.
o Absolutely no shoes, boots or bags allowed on the rink.
o No food, beverages or smoking on the rink.
o Only authorized Park Royal staff allowed on the rink during resurfacing.
o Any skater not abiding by the rules may be asked to leave the ice.

Park Royal will once again put up their ice-skating rink. The rink went up in The Village last year during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and features a unique synthetic material that feels just like real ice – and it doesn’t matter about the weather – rain or shine, warm or cold, people will be able to skate!

Over 3,000 square feet of this unique surface will be set up near Ambleside Beach Park at the 14th St Ferry Building Landing. Skate rentals and sharpening will be available by donation, with all proceeds going to West Vancouver Park Stewardship initiatives.

This skating rink will open noon on February 11th and remain open until February 20th. Daily hours are from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.

These dates correspond with the first ever Columbia Light Festival in West Vancouver. Hosted by the District of West Vancouver and the West Vancouver Community Arts Council, with major sponsor Park Royal, the festival celebrates togetherness with two days of evening and afternoon celebrations.
