Barking Mad – A Meet Up / Tweet Up in Support of Whistler’s Slaughtered Sled Dogs
UPDATED Feb 6, 2011
First ever “doggy” tweetup in history held in reaction to local story about 100 slaughtered Canadian sled dogs
“Barking Mad”
Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 – Noon – 2pm PST Ambleside Park, 1300 Marine
WEST VANCOUVER, BC – Canada’s wealthiest bedroom community played host on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 to the world’s first ever massive social media “doggy” tweetup event. Organized by WestVancouver.com community blog editor and media personality Catherine Barr (catherinebarr.com), the “Barking Mad” event makes history for being the first of its kind ever on record.

Speaking on CKNW 980AM radio’s Bill Good Show last week, Barr said the event was planned in response to recent news about the inhumane and extremely violent slaughter of 100 healthy sled dogs by a local tour operator in the neighbouring resort community of Whistler, BC. Online reaction has included equally violent language and police continue to investigate numerous potential threats made towards the people named in the killings. Social media is being blamed for the threats.
“We need to channel something positive from this tragic event and show the world that this is not Canada, and it’s not the right way to use social media,” said Barr during the interview.
The event was not originally planned as a protest, but rather a social gathering or “Tweetup/Meetup”. Saying that this event is just as much about correct social media practices as it is about the violence against animals, Barr and her Twitter/Facebook followers battled cold and rain to show that social media is the new way to organize a cause in the 21st century.
Volunteers handed out “Tweet Cheat Sheets” to the over 800 attendees. On the page were directions about how to participate in the tweetup event if you didn’t have a Twitter enabled cell phone. “Find a new friend, ask them to tweet for you,” were the directions. Local professional bloggers were accompanied by sign bearers showing their Twitter names so that anyone wanting to take part could easily find an online connection.
Taking place from noon – 2pm in Ambleside Park, West Vancouver, BC (1300 Marine Drive), on the beaches adjacent to the landmark Lions Gate Bridge and the local SPCA, people brought their pampered pooches and wore their red Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic attire. The tweetup hastag was marked with #BarkingMad. Driving rain and cold weather did affect turnout, but thanks to those who also took party virutally, the event was a history making success.
A special balloon ceremony was performed by “Sammy” – a 13 yr old Jack Russell – who carried a heart shaped balloon out to the Squamish Nation Welcome Figure which marks the start of the doggy walk. This 20-foot tall native public art figure stands at the water’s edge and represents a welcoming of all to the area and a wish to respect the land, the animals and the traditions that go with it. Sammy was met by local musician Bruce Vernon performing music from his original composition “Der Abschied” (German for “The Goodbye”).
Online response has been overwhelming and early estimates predict that anywhere from 500 to 1,000 people attended. Inclement weather unfortunately diminished the over 3,000 expected attendees.
The event was covered by every major media outlet in Vancouver including Global BC TV, CTV Vancouver TV, CBC News TV, City TV Vancouver, News 1130 Radio, CKNW 980 Radio, CBC 1 Radio, Virgin 95.3 Radio, Vancouver Sun Newspaper, Vancouver Province Newspaper, North Shore Outlook Newspaper and WestVancouver.com Social Media Hub.

ABOUT WEST VANCOUVER: West Vancouver has a population of approx. 45,000 and is home to some of Canada’s wealthiest properties, including a $12 million estate rumoured to be owned by Oprah Winfrey. Famous residents including billionaire industrialist Jim Pattison, Clinton Foundation trustee Frank Giustra and Grammy award winning musicians Sarah McLachlan, Diana Krall and Elvis Costello, to name a few. It is located five minutes from downtown Vancouver and includes Cypress Bowl ski hill (the former site of the 2010 Winter Olympic freestyle skiing and snowboarding events)
Big thanks to my Virgin Radio 95.3 and Astral Media/AM650 family who will be on site for the afternoon and will be providing us with great music to go with our doggy tweetup event.

Hi everyone. The positive energy continues to flow towards the first ever “doggy” tweetup in history. We have some local celebs confirmed, some prominent politicians and lots and lots of media. Please don’t forget that this event was organized as a result of the violence – ALL OF THE VIOLENCE – including the threats that have been issued online as a result. These threats are equally disturbing and I hope you can join us in channeling that passion into something better. By definition, a “tweetup” is a social, happy event. It’s simply a chance to meet up with new friends and their pups to share in a pleasant afternoon that is the first of its kind in history. Look forward to seeing you all there. – Cat Barr

Volunteers will be on hand moving through the crowds with petitions and/or donation information. “The goal here is to affect change, to demand that heinous crimes like this do not go unpunished”.
Online response has been overwhelming and early estimates predict that anywhere from 500 to 1,000 people and pets could be present. If momentum continues to grow, the numbers could go much higher.

On Jan 31, we heard the tragic news of the inhumane culling of over 100 healthy sled dogs owned by Outdoor Adventures Whistler. It is, without a doubt, one of the most horrific stories of animal slaughter ever to come out of Canada.
To add insult, the incident comes on the eve of Vancouver / Whistler’s one year celebration of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games – a time when the world was watching and we showed off our proud Canadian way of life.
Today, I am neither proud of my country, nor myself. I can’t help but wonder why we allowed something of this magnitude to even happen. Like many others, I am angry, saddened and frustrated to further realize that this heinous act is just one in a long string of increasingly shocking animal cruelty acts that could, essentially, go yet again unpunished under the current Canadian criminal law.
If ever there was a time to speak up, it’s now. If ever there was a time for change, it’s here.
Please join me and other WestVancouver.com friends on Sunday, February 6th, at the dog walk in Ambleside Park in West Vancouver (adjacent to the SPCA) from 12 Noon – 2 pm for an impromptu “meet up / tweet up” outdoor rally to show our governments, and the world, that we are “Barking Mad” and we won’t sit idly by and wait for it to happen again.
A formal press release, and further details of the rally, will be released later today. If you have questions, or wish to be involved, please be sure and follow via Twitter and Facebook, or check back here for more information as it is released.
Sincerely yours,

Developing for the Future – West Vancouver is in for a Big Change
West Vancouver is changing – everywhere.
The revitalization of Ambleside, an often talked about project by those in council, looks like it now finally may see the light of day. In a $50 per head special reception held at Hollyburn Country Club, Mayor Pam Goldsmith-Jones revealed the plans for what will become the new AmblesideNow 2012 initiative.

Along the 1300 block Marine, plans include a walk-through atrium, new four-storey mixed use buildings with commercial space below and housing apartment/condos above, new storefronts, new waterfront amenities and retention of the arts corridor and parks along the beach. West Vancouver municipality will continue to acquire the beachfront properties along Argyle for public use. The West Van Police station would be moved up by municipal hall. Opening hours would be extended beyond 7 pm. There are no current plans for a hotel. (Download the official council report in PDF format here)
Developers are also planning a 138 residential seniors housing building on the former Wetmore Motors site (2200 block Marine). Anchored by the Pacific Arbour Retirement Communities, the “Seniors on Marine / Wetmore” project is now coming before council for input. See more about the proposed project at their website (SeniorsOnMarine.ca)

Plans for the rezoning and revitalization of the Safeway store site (1600-1700 block Marine) are also in the works. Count on a high rise proposal with the de rigueur mixed-use policy in full swing.
Rounding out the mix is Park Royal. Their recent council approval for a new “at grade” street level intersection across Marine Drive (in front of the McDonald’s and newly opened Shopper Drug Mart) indicates their intent to pursue several new developments. Their first project will be the removal of the westernmost vehicular overpass and the installation of the above mentioned street level intersection across Marine Drive. How this could impact traffic in and around the mall, especially in light of the new Lions Gate Bridge approach lanes, is not yet known.

Also on the horizon for Park Royal is their plans for a new multi-million dollar VIP movie theatre to be built on a new third level located at what can best be described as the back of the mall adjacent to the current Brick store location. This new third level mall structure will have eight new theatres, three of them VIP with liquor licensed concierge service, luxury “motion” seats and more.
Future Park Royal plans also include the development of the current White Spot corner into a high-rise, multi-use building with commercial on the lower level and condo apartments, similar to the adjacent West Royal Towers, on the higher floors.

Here is a reprint of West Vancouver’s “AmblesideNOW” project information.
West Vancouver will be 100 years old in 2012. In a century we have evolved from a quiet mill town, once connected to Vancouver by a single rowboat, to one of the most desirable and affluent municipalities on the West Coast. Yet we retain the ethos that makes us a place of excellence – a city nestled between the rain forest and the ocean, a community that embraces its First Nation heritage and preserves our unique lifestyle on the edge of a burgeoning metropolis of more than two million people.
Generations of civic participation and slow, thoughtful and financially prudent growth is how we and those before us built the West Vancouver that exists today. The Memorial Library built in 1950 to commemorate the soldiers of World War II, the 1975 policy to purchase waterfront lots in Ambleside to preserve the waterfront for the public and the new community centre in 2009 are just a few examples of West Vancouver’s quiet evolution as a community that inspires excellence and leads by example.
As in the past, future development and planning must be developed collaboratively with the community to ensure continued success.
Now as we approach our centenary, Council and the community have a tremendous opportunity and responsibility for renewal of Ambleside.
This idea of revitalizing Ambleside – the traditional heart and gateway of our community – isn’t new. It has been under debate for decades, with many thoughtful, citizen-led reports outlining possibilities for enhancing the village and enriching the quality of life we treasure.
Years of thoughtful studies and plans, brought together by the Ambleside Town Centre Strategy Working Group, are ready to be brought to life. Successive Councils have listened to the community interest in having a village that builds on the local successful businesses we have today and brings residents closer to the village centre through the creation of smaller housing options.
Already we have improved the natural Ambleside waterfront through a restored intertidal zone, healthier creeks, salmon returning in better numbers, and better public access. Our dedication to the natural environment should now be matched by the community’s desire to improve our social setting – to be able to enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine near the beach, before heading off to a local restaurant.
In a revitalized Ambleside there will be more people living near the village centre, additional small retailers, office space, pedestrian enjoyment, a strengthened arts scene and more to do in the evening. Ambleside must retain the village life we cherish, and it should not have to shut down after 7pm.
Now, with our 100th anniversary before us, Council has responded to the community’s ideas by putting together a comprehensive plan that seeks your participation and feedback for the revitalization of Ambleside in its entirety. We call this plan AmblesideNow. Ambleside will have a vibrant village centre on the waterfront that embraces arts and culture, bringing about the creation of important public amenities including a vitally-needed public safety building.
Grosvenor, a world leader in mixed-use development and place-making, has secured the rights to private parcels of land on the 1300 Block, in the heart of Ambleside. They have engaged James Cheng, one of Canada’s world-renowned architects, to consult with the public in order to build a signature development on the site that is respectful of West Vancouver’s standards for outstanding community design. One of the ideas they want to explore is a mid-block public atrium for West Vancouverites to congregate, whether it be to sip a coffee on an outdoor patio, listen to a string quartet or stroll through on the way to the beach.
Listen to Cheng himself, a global leader in the design of residential and commercial developments: “I believe in restoring the public realm. Our development will honour the architectural history of West Vancouver, the work of Ron Thom and Arthur Erickson, to create a fitting centrepiece for Ambleside and its residents. We will borrow from concepts worldwide but create a building that is uniquely West Vancouver.”
We also should think of the 1300 Block proposal as a catalyst to bring about our larger community vision. We can maximize taxpayer value of surplus municipal lands on the 1300 Block. We have an opportunity to realize Ambleside’s full potential – and to generate significant financial returns to the Endowment Fund, or enhance public amenities for future generations.
The vision of AmblesideNow is set out below:
Construct a new “post-disaster” public safety building for our police and fire departments that can withstand an earthquake. This is essential to guaranteeing public safety in the event of natural disaster.
Move our police from their currently inadequate 1300 Block location into this new public safety building. It will be built next to the municipal hall, over the existing parking lot. It will be the only post-disaster building for emergency services in West Vancouver. That will give our families a new element of community safety in the event of a major earthquake. This will also make available valuable space on the 1300 Block for the revitalization of Ambleside.
The Fire Department could also move to the same earthquake-proof building. This would make us one of the few places in Canada where police and fire are under the same roof in a shared facility.
We will pay as we go for the new public safety building, using the funds from the sale of the 1300 Block, the No. 1 Fire Hall property and surplus lands on the 1500 Block of Fulton Avenue. There could and should be no burden to the taxpayer and we can avoid long-term debt financing, to build this essential community asset. The proposed developments and the return to the taxpayer are entirely subject to public input.
Any surplus profits from the AmblesideNow project will be invested into the Endowment Fund or used to enhance public amenities for future generations.
As Ambleside evolves, we will continue our commitment to park and arts uses along Argyle and throughout Ambleside. We will continue enhancing public parks, beaches and pedestrian and cycling amenities. AmblesideNow will ensure that can happen.
We should continue to acquire the remaining waterfront properties on Argyle, in keeping with our longstanding and highly successful policy of balancing our natural environment with public amenities. This will enable us to move ahead on the careful repurposing of some existing waterfront buildings, to create more parkland, an enhanced promenade and add new venues.
AmblesideNow will allow for the creation of better housing options close-in to the village. Key public views will be respected and streetscapes will be enhanced. It is up to the community to determine the density it expects and can support, which will influence the financial return. The vision is to provide much needed housing stock within walking distance of the village.
As a community we have the opportunity to create a truly sustainable village in the heart of West Vancouver. Here are our guiding principles:
AmblesideNow is intended to be carried out by maximizing surplus municipal land values without additional taxation. The financial returns available for the Endowment Fund or public amenities will be dependant upon zoning decisions.
There must be full consultation with the community to shape this project. We will do this with a series of public events, beginning with open houses and social gatherings that lead to formal hearings, to engage our citizens in all aspects of the vision.
All buildings on the 1300 Block will be LEED-certified, to make Ambleside village an exemplar of sustainability.
AmblesideNow will see arts and culture enhanced through the creation of more public amenities and venues. The collection and activities of Gertrude Lawson Museum and Archives will be relocated to a more suitable and accessible site in the village, for the public to experience.
AmblesideNow’s community environment will be enhanced:
AmblesideNow will include a thoughtful strategy to increase the flow of pedestrians, people in cars and cyclists into a revitalized business centre that is the heart of the village.
Commercial development will adhere to the values of West Vancouver.
We will continue our successful efforts to protect our marine environment, preserve key public views and improve public access to one of the West Coast’s great beaches and waterfront communities.
For the last 100 years, Ambleside has been at the heart of West Vancouver, our original village centre. We now need to ensure it will stay that way for the next 100 years, for all to enjoy.
AmblesideNow – It is up to us.
What You Need to Know About Real Estate and Homes – Fact vs Fiction
January 24, 2011 by Editor C
“What you need to know!” Are you properly informed? The perils of inaccurate information.
Recently I was asked to be a guest expert analyst on a local “Business in Vancouver” radio show. Many callers who phoned in expressed frustration at the seemingly endless stream of inconsistent or conflicting information which seems to pervade our Real Estate industry. Often these discrepancies arise because so many different sources are being quoted or consulted over short periods of time, in particular when real estate is making the news. Financial institutions, Real Estate Boards, development companies, and local Realtors may all have access to much of the same statistical information, but may all reach different conclusions depending on their individual interpretations. This may arise for several reasons including; the analysis of too broad a geographical or statistical area, limited experience at the gathering or presentation of the facts, or personal or individual agendas that may benefit by the presentation of the facts with a particular slant to them.
If you required competent, reliable information and advice on a legal matter, a taxation problem, or a health issue you would seek out, ask questions, and in fact demand answers from an expert. These responses may not necessarily be what you wanted to hear, but this knowledge would be invaluable in the reaching of a prudent decision that may affect the future happiness and well-being of you and your family.
For some reason in Real Estate many times the public falls short on the gathering and challenging of the appropriate information they need. Is it because we don’t move very often and are not sure of all the questions to ask? Is it possibly that we only want to hear the answers we want to hear? One thing for sure, the buying and selling of your own personal residence is one of the most emotional processes you will ever go through. In most cases your home represents your biggest financial asset. The challenge is to ensure that good family memories, ego entitlement issues, and an emotional roller coaster do not complicate a process that requires constant prudent discipline.
So how can we become better informed? First, be determined to get unbiased statistical information pertinent to your area. Second, make sure that all the evidence gathered directly pertains to the type of real estate you may be buying or selling. Third, get information in your area over an extended period of time. This will demonstrate to you the historical highs and lows for your type of real estate.

Broad generalities can be deceptive. Sales that have doubled “month over month” are totally unimportant if last months totals were the worst on record.
Many times released information can be grossly misleading. Broad generalities can be deceptive. Sales that have doubled “month over month” are totally unimportant if last months totals were the worst on record. So called “home” sales should be separated as the pace of condo sales may be dramatically different than that of detached sales. The listing count change in your specific area may be totally different than that experienced in other areas of Greater Vancouver. Coquitlam prices may be rising, but you can’t give away a home in West Van over $3.0 mil. What are you to make of it all?
Over my 26 years selling real estate I have been disappointed at the number of times I have witnessed the public suffer devastating financial losses, to say nothing of the massive stress, all due to either a lack of education, or a stubbornness to listen. Sellers who listed too high only to have a falling market wipe out hundreds of thousands of dollars saved over a life time. Buyers who in an anxious frenzy, paid $50,000-$100,000 more than their next nearest competitor in a multiple offer scenario. Many of these clients may take weeks or months, sometimes never, to become fully aware of the mistakes they have made. The haunting question is, if they had more of the accurate information they needed, would they still have made the decisions they did?
The problem is two-sided. The party delivering the information must be willing to tell it like it is, and the receiving party should be willing to receive the information even when it is not what they want to hear. No doctor wants to deliver the news of a serious illness. In most cases however, the client is better served by receiving that knowledge, and can plan their future accordingly. Clients who have accurate information can make prudent, relaxed, and most importantly responsible decisions to protect their most treasured investment. Real estate is all timing, being in the right place at the right time, and having the courage to make the right decisions. This can only be accomplished by acquiring all the required information and controlling your ego and your emotions!
Choosing the right Realtor is the first step to a responsible home move. Your Realtor must provide you with 4 qualities. First, they must have the time to dedicate their personal time to commit to your every need. Second, they must have extensive product knowledge. Third, they must be able to provide you with both current and historical statistical information. Fourth, their negotiating skills need to be second to none. Moving does not need to be stressful. Your home is your most important asset, be prudent, be responsible, but most importantly….get informed!

Mickey Rooney, whose personal motto is “Don’t retire, Inspire!” is set to celebrate his 10th decade of entertaining with a pan-Canada tour of his and wife, Jan Rooney’s, “Let’s Put on A Show!”
Crawling on to the stage during his father’s Vaudeville act at 18 months in 1922, Mickey Rooney began a truly legendary career. He now begins his 10th decade entertaining audiences world-wide. Joined on stage by his wife, the singer/actress Jan Rooney, they perform their highly acclaimed musical “Let’s Put On A Show!” 85th Anniversary Edition. In 2004 Mickey and Jan received a Star on the prestigious “Hollywood Walk of Fame” this tour follows in that grand tradition.
“Let’s Put On A Show!” is an autobiographical musical, highlighted with film clips, humor and anecdotal memories which enjoyed a successful run Off-Broadway in New York. Mickey is excited to share the stage with his wife of over 29 years, the singer/actress Jan Rooney. Drawing on a rich 80 plus year career, the musical numbers are broad ranged and are taken from Mickey’s films, some original tunes and Jan’s vast repertoire, including her tribute to Patsy Cline. Additionally the show features a moving tribute to Mickey’s famous co-star from his days at MGM, Judy Garland. The show also features an on stage trio. The tour kicked off August 2007 with a successful 39 day 25 show tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Since their return to the states in October they have played at major Civic Centers throughout the United States and have had successful runs at both Resorts and the Hilton Hotels and Casinos in Atlantic City. From December 1, 2007 through January 6, 2008 they made their UK Pantomime Premiere in “Cinderella” with Jan playing “the Fairy Godmother” and Mickey portraying “Baron Hardup”. They capped the year 2008 reprising their roles in “Cinderella” at the Bristol Hippodrome in Bristol, UK.
The show enjoyed a sold-out 15 city tour of the UK in June of 2006. In addition to the UK and Off-Broadway the show has been playing successfully across the country including a long stint in Branson and at many casinos.
In 2006 Mickey starred in the much acclaimed comedy “Night at the Museum” with Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais and Dick Van Dyke. Mickey and Jan have made numerous film appearances together. Among their favorites “Wreck The Halls” and “Lost Stallions: The Journey Home”. In 2009 they filmed the comedy “Saddle Up!” in Philadelphia.
Here’s some of what the critics have said about Mickey Rooney/Jan Rooney “Let’s Put On A Show!”
“Mr. Rooney still has star power. Mrs. Rooney has a strong, attractive voice” New York Times
“…strictures be damned: Let’s Put On a Show! is no put-on; it really is a show, complete with an apt three-piece band (and, for a bit, Mickey as jazz-piano whiz) and oodles of sweetness, charming self-mockery, and—why the hell not?—understated nostalgia.
Jan… a singer with rubato-laden self-assurance and still-saucy countenance. The show is cleverly conceived still doing socko impersonations of Clark Gable, Lionel Barrymore, and Maurice Chevalier, still exudes star presence.
“Let’s Put On A Show!” exhilarating [and] his impressions of golden age Hollywood stars are delightful” nytheatre.com
“Make room for Rooney! Rooney … demonstrates the reason for his longevity. Jan performs in a pleasantly smoky voice proves a deeply moving, inspirational lesson.” NY Post
Opening each performance of “Let’s Put On A Show!” is Canadian Tenor, Julian Gallo, singing arias from “Cats”, “Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Miserables”. He will be joined by fellow Canadian, Lenni Stewart, soprano, for duets from “Phantom” and “The Merry Widow”

West Vancouver Blue Buses, operating under contract to TransLink, provide transit connections to West Vancouver from downtown Vancouver, UBC, Lions Bay, North Vancouver and Park Royal Mall. Several routes pass through the Ambleside/Dundarave area, and passengers can disembark anywhere along Marine Drive between 13th and 17th Streets (Ambleside). See the bus schedule for details.
To travel to West Vancouver from downtown Vancouver, take the Lions Gate Bridge and exit west along Marine Drive. Travel past the Park Royal Shopping center and turn left at 13th Street to enter Ambleside Park. The Information Booth is located at the foot of 14th Street.
Visitors arriving from both east and west along the Upper Levels Highway, should take the 15th Street turnoff and travel south (down the hill) to Bellevue Avenue. Turn left onto Bellevue and enter Ambleside Park at the foot of 13th Street. Street parking is also available.
